Sometimes too much of a good thing can create chaos and confusion.
Global Templates has amassed a fantastic collection of free website templates designs,
but how are you going to choose the one for you?
Here are a few guiding words that you might find helpful:
1. Organize your materials. Before you download one of our free website templates designs
take a look at your materials. What kind of content are you going to upload? Do you
have pictures, videos, texts? Visualize the division of your content. What would you like
to see on the homepage of your new website? If you have a lot of content and you
believe you will want to add many pages to your website, this may affect the choice of
template. You’ll want a template that can easily be duplicated.
2. Consider the navigation of your website. You may have the most beautiful website in
the world, if the navigation is too complex, you’ll lose visitors. Menus and buttons are
important. In most websites the menu is located at the top of the page or on the left.
This is due to the fact that in Western society most people are used to reading pages in
this direction and their eye will automatically wander to those places on the page. If you
want to do something unusual, make sure it’s easily understood.
3. What kind of website are you about to create? Is it a business website? A personal
website? An art website? The vibe and message of your website should vary depending
on your answer. As an artist you’ll want to convey something very different than an
attorney’s practice website for example. Scan the free website template designs for
something that can easily be modified to suit your purpose. Business websites tend to
be cleaner, with sharper lines and less frill. As an artist, you might want to find
something softer, more creative.
4. Know the language. Most of Global Template’s designs are in html, but there are a few
other programming languages. Html is very easily manipulated, but if you don’t know
CSS or PHP and you’re using a
free website templates designed in that language you
might find yourself in trouble. Don’t forget to make sure you have all the tools necessary
to finish the job and all the relevant programs installed on your computer.
5. Choose a color scheme. Each website template comes with a prefabricated design and
color scheme but this can be easily changed. Even so, you might want to choose a set
number of colors and stick to them. Business websites will tend to have less colors than
an artist’s website (not as a rule at all though, just the general trend). If you’re building a
business website, choose 2-4 colors and stick to them. Too many colors on the same
page may lead to noise and distract your visitors. Unless this is part of your concept, use
the same color scheme for each page on your website. This will maintain unity and let
people understand that they are in your world and that this world is defined by you. Be
the webmaster of your web universe.
6. Choose a template that has room for text. This is particularly important for the
homepage. Texts are the search engine’s bread and butter and unless you are creating a
private website that will only be seen by a handful of people, you’re going to want to
get indexed by the search engines. Titles are not enough, although they are important.
Add about 400 words to your homepage and 250 words in each of the other pages. If
you’re scratching your head at this moment because you’re planning a photography
based website, relax. You can always play a few tricks. Most website template designs
have a footer (and if yours doesn’t, make one). You can always add your texts to the
footer and minimize the size so it doesn’t encroach on the design.
